Jack has served as the supervisor of Shipping for a large online retailer for three years. When he first began this position, operations ran quite smoothly. However, after two years on the job, the company had experienced significant growth. Jack's subordinates had grown from eight to twenty, reflecting athe significant increase in packages being shipped. Slowly, turnover started to increase and shipping errors began to creep upwards. Moreover, the productivity of the department began to decreased. As the lone supervisor of the twenty employees in the Shipping Department, Jack knew that he would be held solely accountable foar the escalating problems. Being a relatively new company that had grown rather quickly, the organization's HR department did little more than handle payroll and benefits. Functions such as hiring, training, performance apparaisal, and discipline were handled by the various department. Trying to be proactive, Jack e-mailed his boss with several suggestions for improving the performance of this department.

4. Inefficient Human Resource Department
5. Human resource function such as hiring, training, performance appraisal and discipline handled by other departments and not Human Resource Department itself.

Solutions:
Solutions I would suggest are as follows


- Human Resource Department: First of all this organization, should have to get in an effective HR department in place which will look into all workforce planning and workforce development activities.
- it is not the core job of any managers to look into these activities

HR being in place below would be the next set of activities they can look into:

1. To reduce the turnover in a shipping company below strategies need to be followed

- Job analysis: In any organization the core job of HR is to find out what is the requirement of the organization first and then to build the job requirement accordingly. This being a shipping industry, HR will have to look into job roles like packaging, storing and distributing etc and define the job roles and responsibilities.

- Recruitment and selection: Once the job analysis has been done, the next step would be to recruit and select the right person for the right job. HR can help with the initial level of screening and sourcing and then can pass it on to the technical managers to have a final round. By doing this, both the HR and the Manager gets to know if the candidate is a right fit or not.

- Compensation: With the help of job analysis each job role can be compensated accordingly. By compensating rightly turnover would tend to reduce.

2. In order to reduce the shipping errors being high below strategies can be looked into

- Training: Since this shipping Organization has growing tremendously, the employees have to be up scaled accordingly. Technological skills and development has to be improved through training

3. In order to look into decrease in productivity a good performance appraisal system has to be in place.


A performance appraisal system should
- set target for each employee and explain the key performance areas to be performed
- communicate the goals effectively
- provide feedback on performance on and off
- use statistical methods for measurement of performance
- finally look into employees development and growth

By following all the above steps organization can improve its productivity
