In our examples: the federal government has its policies and procedures written down according to the law and law makers. the degree of formalization is the highest here. a franchise of fast food chain will also have a lot of formal ways and policies written down to maintain the quality and customer service at the samelevel at all the stores, it is lesser than federal government. While, a university is also formalized, it wont be to the extent of federal government or franchise.
centralization is the extent to which the decision making is concentrated in the higher management or levels of the organization.
federal government is the highest among centralization since the decision making is done by the highest authority. next would be university, since here also the decision making is done mainly by high authorities but some power is also given to students. a franchise of fast food would have decision making at the customer level and staff level to handle customers and rest would be with higher authorities.
complexity is the measure of how the different departments or entities are similar or different from each other in an organization.
in a federal government, there are many departments which have different work and different policies, hence complexity is the highest. a university is also high in complexity because it can have many departments for different courses. a franchise would have lowest complexity comparing to these three since its diferent entities are similar and operate in similar ways.
