Question
Different stages in distribution network/supply chain for fruits and vegetables (at local as well as national level) in India are discussed below:
Post harvest of fruits and vegetables they are processed in order to minimize the post harvest loss. This is necessary in India where there is a lock of cold storage and unavailability of cold chain facilities. Immediately after harvest fruits and vegetables are processed through the any of the following means – thermal procession, dehydration, freezing, drying, as well as fermentation.
The different stages or channels of supply chain that exists in India for fruits and vegetables are:
1. Producer – trader – wholesaler – retailer – consumer
2. Producer – trader – retailer – consumer
3. Producer – trader – consumer
4. Producer – consumer
In channels 1 the fruits and vegetables are collected by traders under the supervision of a quality assessment-in charge. The packed material is moved to warehouses of wholesalers who then sell it to retail outlets. The cost of transportation, handling, labor etc is borne by the procuring agency in each stage.
In channel 2 the retailer directly buys from the trader who acts as a commission agent. The traders in this case do not take title of goods and merely acts as agents or intermediaries. The fruits and vegetables are directly moved from the producer location to the retail outlets.
The third and the fourth channel exist on a minimal scale in India and it is the first two network stages that are pervasive in the country.
The stages mentioned above differ from state to state and from one region to another region in India.
