Explanation / Answer

In America, currently obesity rate is very high and obesity prevalence amongst youth and children shows an alarming signal in terms of American healthcare. The rate of obesity in youth and children is currently 17%,which is an alarming number. Not much improvement has been seen in case of obesity cases in the last few years.

Below mentioned policies have been undertaken by the government to improve the condition :

School Nutrition Legislation: Under this policy, the healthy nutrtion is being offered to the students in the school as government aid.

Body Mass Index or Student Fitness Screening at School: Body Mass index of every student is being screened in the school and appropriate consulting is being done.

Diabetes Screening and Management at School : Every student is being screened for Diabetes and appropraite consulting is being done.

Insurance Coverage for Obesity Prevention and Treatment : Insurance coverage encourages the people to go for consultation and appropriate treatment for Obesity.

Proposed Policy

My Proposed policy is to include 1 hour session exclusively on Obesity prevention and treatment in the school curriculum. This would comprise of lecture sessions on obesity, harmful effects and how to prevent it and appropriate treatment of the same. External physicians should be invited to take the sessions and would act as spokesperson to talk about obesity and how to prevent it. It would also include physical activity session where students are encouraged to get involved in some sports activity orsome physical training to maintain healthy life.

It should be monitored regularly by the health care department that the policy is implemented properly and meticulously. Major heathcare organizations can depute one physician for each school to deliver lecture and sessions on obesity and its management. They would act as spokesperson and being in the same field can influence the students in a better way.

In other countries,like India,government has made 1 session on physical fitness as mandate. It includes a session on physical activity, yoga or lecture by a generalphysician invited from some established health care centre. Regular health screening is being done for the students.

It will improve the American Health care systems as the obesity can be managed and prevented if the person becomes conscious at an early age. It would lead to any serious health problems and thus treatment would alsobe accessible as the physican would counsel each student individually.

Socioeconomic factors like entire society would become conscious about obesity due to regular monitoring and plan for its early treatment and management.
