Redundancy hit Paul just a week after he had celebrated his 50th birthday. He had spent the previous 10 years as Production Director of a large manufacturer. The parent company had sold the subsidiary company to a competitor that did not wish to retain the incumbent management team. Paul decided to work with a professional career consultant.
The Issues:
· He hadn’t conducted a job search for more than 23 years because of his last three moves had all been initiated by headhunters
· He had reached 50 but was far from ready for the scrap heap
· And he was in a state of shock over his sudden redundancy
Explanation / Answer
Paul was a Production Director in a large manufacturing organization. I would assume he is a qualified Mechanical Engineer with experience of directing production and operations for more than 2 decades.
For 10 years prior to being retrenched from the last job, Paul was at a senior position, wherein he was responsible for driving strategy and overseeing the execution for a specific area within the manufacturing facility.
What Paul does next is also dependent on resources available with him. Assuming he has enough money as contingency to meet household expenses over a period of 6 months, the next decision for Paul is whether he would l ike to work for another organization or work as an independent consultant. Small organizations cannot afford to hire a quality production auditor or other senior functions on a full-time basis. Paul could pitch for these services and work for a fee.
This would also give him flexibility to utilize the rest of his time to do freelance teaching at colleges or universities as a guest lecturer or professor.
On the contrary, if Paul is looking for a full-time job, he should first publicize on job portals and professional networking sites like Linkedin. He should clearly state that he is available and looking for a new opportunity.
