At present, there are three paramedics and two physicians on duty during each shift. Only physicians can perform exit evaluations (G) and conduct psychological interviews (F). Other activities can be carried out by either physicians or paramedics.

Performance time for each workstation under every option ( Fig 1, Fig 2 and Fig 3) cab be listed as per following :

Fig 1:

A-B = 11 + 8 = 19

C-D = 4 + 7 = 11

E = 16

F = 12

G = 12

Thus bottleneck workstation with maximum duration is A-B with duration of 19

Since, it is bottleneck workstation which decides cycle time of the system, the cycle time of the system = 19 minutes

A-C = 11 + 4 = 15

B+D = 8 + 7 = 15

E = 16

F = 12

G = 12

Thus bottleneck workstation with maximum duration is E with duration of 16

Since, it is bottleneck workstation which decides cycle time of the system, the cycle time of the system = 16 minutes

Fig 3 :

A-D = 11 + 7 = 18

B – C = 8 + 4= 12

E = 16

F = 12

G = 12

Thus bottleneck workstation with maximum duration is A-D with duration of 18

Since, it is bottleneck workstation which decides cycle time of the system, the cycle time of the system = 18 minutes

Thus minimum cycle time of 16 minutes will be achieved in case of Fig 2
