Question

Consider a building with 8 floors. On each floor, there are 8 PCs and all the PCs connected to a local network (Ethernet). All those local networks (8 of them, each on one floor) are connected to a router. The IP address range allocated to the building is 200.201.202.0-200.201.202.255. In the questions below, please explain the steps you used to determine the solution (Do not just write the final answer. You will not receive full scores if you do so.) We would like to allocate subnets such that each floor has a separate subnet. What is the subnet mask and IP addresses of the computers on 5th floor? (Suppose the higher floors gets higher IP addresses.) How many PCs can be added on each floor without changing the subnet mask? How many floors (with 8 PCs on each floor) can be added to the building without changing the subnet mask? Due to a reconstruction, all 8 PCs on the 8th floor will be moved to the 7th floor. Can subletting still be used such that each floor will have a separate subnet? If yes, what is the subnet mask? If no, explain why? Suppose you use subnets and you are free to determine how many subnets you will have in the building and how many PCs you will connect to each subnet. What is the maximum number of PCs that can be connected?

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

2.1)

For separte subnet while giving higher subnet to the higher floor the ip address of 5th floor will range from 200.201.202.128 to 200.201.202.159

2.2)

Without changing the subnet mask on each floor we can put 24 more computers. Because total number of hosts by the given address can be 256-2= 254, and currently we have 64 hosts, so now we can have 254-64= 190 more hosts, by dividing these on 8 floors we will get 24

2.3)

If we want to add the floor by restricting only 8 computers on each floor then 256-64= 192/8= 24 more floors can be added. Just like above the same number of floors can be added.

2.4)

No, we cannot hold in same subnet address range, because by current scenario we can only hold 32 computers on each floor but putting computers of 8 floors toghther will make it 64.

2.5)

Total 254 pc's can be connected, now this we can devide in subnets to connect as per our convinience.

I hope this helps. Don't forget to give a thumbs up if you like this.
