Question

As you are about to complete the Systems Analysis course in a very well known university, you were hired by GRC, a manufacturing company, to design their new information systems with respect to the level of centralization/distribution. All together there are 12 plants in this organization. Three of them are located in Chicago, one mile from each other. The corporate office along with two plants, are located in Detroit in the same location. Four plants are located in California. They all produce the same products in a very similar way. For all practical purposes, they all have similar information needs. Some minor differences may occur with respect to the final structure of the reports, and with respect to the reports they use. In spite of the similarity, they do not cooperate with each other. Each plant is independent. As a matter of fact, sometimes they compete with each other. Each plant has to submit once a week a detailed financial report to the corporate mangement. In addition, the mangement wants to have the ability to retrieve information from each plant regarding projects, quotes, etc. whenever they like. Which type of Information Systems would you recommend implementing with respect to the level of centralization/distribution? Please present the alternatives regarding software development, database mangement and location ( central, regional, local), operation and support. Please discuss each alternative, recommend one, and justify it.

Plese make sure that each of the above topics (software development, database mangement and location, and operation and support) is discussed separately.

Explanation / Answer

The term information system usually refers to a computer-based system, one that is designed to support the operations, management, and decision functions of an organization. Hardware, software, people, data and process contribute to the information system. System software should be implemented with respect to level of centralization. They are the programs that manages the resources of computer and simplify their applications. They include software development, database management and location and operation.

In software development approach SDLC can be6 used. Its full forn is software development life cycle. This approach is mostly appropriated when there are predictable information requirements. It includes entry of data, very high transactions and processing of data input. These all are our requirements in this system anaysis. So, this model can be used in alternative.

Alternative for database management: It means to keep data at one place and retrieving it. Cloud offerings can be used as it creates own global data repository.
