Pay is one of the motivating factors of the job. Money is a measure of success for most of the individuals, and a well paying job is a source of satisfaction. One who earns well has a feeling that he / she is compensated well for his efforts as an employee and the the company acknowledges his / her dedication and hard work. He /she is further motivated to work with even more dedication , knowing that prospects will be much better with higher position and increasing responsibilities.

The motivation theories support the significance of money among the motivating factors, though it is not the only factor. Maslow's hierarchy of needs counts the salary in the safety needs while Motivation Hygiene theory puts the lack of adequate compensation among the factors that lead to dissatisfaction and loss of interest in the job.

Companies design their pay policies to arrtact, retain and develop the best people in the industry. Poor pay will not attract or retain the good people, that will deteriorate the performance of the company. The managers need to focus on performance linked rewards to motivate employees to earn more through good performance.It is known that the best companies of the business world are some of the best paymasters and go an extra mile to retain, nurture and develop the employees with favorable policies, compensation being one of them.
