one company should have vision, it is like an ambition to an individual, a vision to a firm. we can not expect an individual without an ambition, similarly a firm without a vision. vision narrowly expalins why the firm existed, and what strategies and steps it takes into consider to reach its vision.
vision is a narrow one and expalins its long term goal, where as a mission statement explains it into short term objectives. here i am explaining ITC vision and Mission for example:
vision of ITC: Sustain ITC's position as one of India's most valuable corporations through world class performance, creating growing value for the Indian economy and the Company's stakeholders
mission: To enhance the wealth generating capability of the enterprise in a globalising environment, delivering superior and sustainable stakeholder value.
if you observe the vision statement it speaks about the company performance and the stakeholders value creation. it means it is considering all the requirements of all kinds of people.
yes, a vision statement helps the firm to change its goals and objectives and it works to achieve them. so, it is encourage the change also.
generally vision statements are in general descriptions only, they can not be specified. if they are specified or specific, it means that they gives priorities to somekind of people than others. it is not good for the firm, a firm has to consider all kinds of people and their priorities.
usually organisations use vision statement only, they can not use my vision statement.
