Question

In this week’s Assignment, you will research an example of successful conflict resolution, and analyze the factors that contributed to its success.

After reviewing the text readings, complete the following week's assignment:

Conduct an Internet search for a news article that describes an example of a group conflict requiring resolution, or a past conflict which was successfully resolved. Some types of municipal conflicts are common; for example, you might search for a union dispute or labor strike such as the 1970 U.S. Postal Workers strike, the 2009 City of Toronto strike, or the 1981 Air Traffic Controllers strike. Or, you might search for a local issue which involves multiple conflicting parties, such as the building of a landfill, quarry, or power plant.

Briefly describe the article and scenario, as well as how the conflict was resolved (or if it has yet to be resolved.

What methods did the different parties use to resolve the conflict? Were there other methods they might have used? If the conflict has not been resolved, provide suggestions that might result in a win-win scenario.

Introduction:

Organizations never clearly define what critical thinking and problem-solving skills are when it comes to conflicting situations they everyone encounter in their day to day operations. Instead, they expect them to be put in practice during job interviews for a live demonstration, during classroom and on the job training. These are more practical oriented and it never coincides with the theoretical learning experience. Unless somebody is presented with a real-time problem, it is not easy to crack and apply your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Some of the core critical thinking skills are Interpretation, Analysis, Inferences, Evaluation, Explanation and self-regulation and conflict management.

Before we get into the details of using these skills and how they were used in managing conflict, I would like to mention about an organizational conflicting situation that I encountered last week in my company.

As far as safety and security oriented compliance at our organization, Global Security will provide leadership alongside our risk partners in order to create an effective and high-integrity security culture that achieves cost-effective risk reduction to our business. According to our chief security officer, the key ingredients of mitigating the risk situations are Leadership which includes top and middle management team, Risk Partners that covers Information Security and Internal Audit systems, Effective and High Integrity teams and the overall culture of our organization. Our approach towards Cost-Effective Risk Reduction strategy is the core crux of creating a risk-free environment.

There was a situation of political unrest in the city which began at 11 AM. At this time, all 650 staff reported to work and all employees are working on the premises. When we went through the news, our administrative department and HR department got to know about this political situation of a rift between two different groups and there is severe damage to many of the local properties and some casualties to the human being as well. Some of the anti-social elements have set fire to few shops and that led to the rapid protest in some areas of the city. Around 3 PM, the situation was much wilder than what was anticipated. The government wanted to implement sec 144 where not more than 3 people are allowed to go together in public and were trying to take all possible measures to control and stop the violence. In order to ensure rumors are not spread across the city, the government turned off the internet and mobile communications. The local transport system has been immensely affected and it was going to be 5 PM where an office is supposed to be closed. Due to the local issue outside the office, facilities, HR, and admin department initiated an emergency meeting to plan how to send the staff back home.

This is a clear classic example of critical thinking and a problem-solving the situation where there is a huge conflict of interest were witnessed by staff that belongs to various different departments. HR team was concerned about safety features of staff. Building Maintenance team was concerned about likely damages to the building and the facilities if they continue to keep the office opened after the regular working hours. If we send staff out of office and if someone is being attacked due to the Riot, an organization will be held responsible for such occurrences and genuinely we don’t want to see our employees going through such tough situation. Beyond all this, employee’s mindset was all at their homes thinking about their loved ones. As most of them are working parents, they need to pick up their kids and spouses from schools and other locations.

Here the management team applied their core critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and various conflict resolution techniques. Followed the various aspects of Interpreting and Analyzing the situation, creating inferences, Evaluating and creating regulation and directions that address all the conflicts.

Formation of Emergency Response team: The immediate reaction and response to an emergency situation commonly focusing on ensuring life safety and reducing the severity of the incident that includes Life Safety, Mitigation to facilities and Environment and Damage Assessment

Crisis Management: The overall coordination of an organization’s response to a crisis in an effective, timely manner, with the goal of avoiding or minimizing damage to the organization’s profitability, reputation, and ability to operate. Activation of Local Incident Management Team who does Impact Assessment, Resource Management, Asset Coordination and Crisis Communications

Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery: The ability of an organization to provide service and support for its customers and to maintain its viability before, during, and after a business continuity event. Activities designed to restore IT systems, including hardware, applications and telecommunications systems from outages. Technology and Restoring Recovery.

The three core functions of the Local Incident Management team were to command control, clear communication and people accountability. Initial assessment includes, what happened, what is the impact and in what phase. Actions were around creating command and control, risk assessment, forecasting the impact, synchronizing the communication channels, People accountability, and Task Assignment.

Reviewing the final results, taking actions to mitigate the gaps and documenting lessons learned. With the help of these critical thinking and problem-solving skills of the Emergency Response teams, we were able to formulate a pragmatic process for overcoming the conflict.
