Question

I need this answered:

You have been asked to replace the company’s aging telephone system with a new voice-over-IP system. The network administrator doesn’t want UDP traffic on his data network. The telephone system manager is unsure if regular data traffic will interfere with the new telephone traffic. Describe how you can use VLANs, network segmentation and traffic prioritization across the company’s Ethernet network to provide sufficient bandwidth to the telephone system without significantly interfering with the data network operation.

Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

VLAN's main functionality is to divide the single large network into smaller sub networks. Actually it doesn't divides but it will works like that.

Generally this is used to divide the traffic inorder not to effect the specific functionality. It just acts as a multiple hosted network with the help of VLAN software. All the network is connected to one main server only but it makes the network work like multiple servers are hosting the network.

Most of the times VLANs are used to provide multiple segmented works like internet access, demilitarized zone, VOIPs,c lient separation etc.

One segment of work will not effect or will get effected by any other segements. They do their each individual jobs.

Now coming to our VOIP setup using VLANs it will be not all any problem to the data traffic or UDP traffic because we will setup the new layer on the physical network for the VOIPs.

VLANs creates layers virtually on physical network connection to act like seperate network. So it never interferes or disturbs the other type of network traffic.
