Question

Consider Figure 3.5. What are the source and destination port values in the segments flowing from the server back to the clients' processes? What are the IP addresses in the network-layer datagrams carrying the transport-layer segments? Web client host C Web server B source port: dost. port source port: dest. port 7532 80 26145 80 source IP dest. IP: IP dest. IP Web client host A source port 26145 dest. port 80 source IP dest. IP Figure 3.5 Two clients, using the same destination port number (80) to communicate with the same Web server application

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

According to the given Figure 3.5, two clients are using the same destination port number (80) to communcate with the same Web server application.

In client-server process, the segments of the source port and the destination port swaps for the server back to the client.

As given in Figure 3.5, Web server is sending the source port 26145 and the destination port 80 to the Host A. Hence the server B will send the segments back to the Host A with the source port 80 and the destination port 26145. Now the web server B will send the segments back with the source port 80 and the destination port 26145 and 7532.

The source port and destination port values in the segment are given in the following tables:

Web server to Host A:

Left Process:

Web server B to Host C:

Right process:

Web server B to Host C:

The IP addresses in the network-layer datagrams carrying the transport-layer segments are heading back to the Host A or the Host C. The source IP address set to the web servers IP address and the destination IP address set to the client IP address, which it specified in its own request it had originally sent to the server.

Suppose that IP addresses of the hosts A, B and C are x, y and z respectively.

Therefore, the source port, the destination port, the source IP address and destination IP address are provided in the following table:

Web server to Host A:

Web server A to Host B:

Web server B to Host C:

Source Port Destination Port 80 26145
