Question

An 8cm^3 ice cube is floating in a 10x10x10 cm glass container completely filled with water. 90% of the ice cube is submerged and 10% is above the water level.

A. How much water is going to spill over when the ice melts?

B. Consider now that a .01 cm^3 piece of gold is incorporated inside the ice cube. Will this ice cube float on water? How much of the ice cube will be above the water level? How much water is going to spill over when the ice melts?

...I understand part A that no water is going to overflow due to the dispersion of ice but not sure about the second part of the question.

Explanation / Answer

In part B of this question ..

The answer is that yes ice will still float above water because the net upthrust on ice+gold body will still be sufficient enough to keep it floating, but the part of ice submerged here will be more than part of ice submerged in pure ice block because density of gold is more than density of ice so it will increase the net density of combination..

Hope u got it..will be keen to help u in future :)
