Question

1.The milk silo has an internal diameter of 4.2 m and is pumped out at a constant flow rate of 29532 L h-1. How many minutes does it take to empty the silo? (Give answer to 1 DP). The pressure at the base of the tank (before pumping starts) is 19.6 psi(gauge). You will need the initial height of milk calculated from the previous question which is 13.245m

2.he milk is pumped (at a constant flow rate of 29532 L h-1) through a pipe that has an internal diameter of 65 mm. What is the milk velocity (m s-1)? (Give your answer to 2DP)

3.As the milk is pumped it must be heated from its storage temperature of 6

Explanation / Answer

1.

Flowrate Q = 29532 L/h = 29532*10^-3 / (60*60) m^3/s = 0.0082 m^3/s

Cross-section area A = pi/4*d^2 = 3.14/4*4.2^2 = 13.8474 m^2

Total volume V = Area*height = 13.8474*13.245 = 183.408 m^3

Time taken = Volme/ Flowrate = 183.408 / 0.0082 = 22366.9 s = 372.8 minutes

2.

Pipe cross-section A = 3.14/4*65^2 = 3316.625 mm^2 = 0.003316625 m^2

Velocity = Flowrate / area = 0.0082 / 0.003316625 = 2.47 m/s

3.

Heat = m*Cp*(T2 - T1) = density*flowrate*Cp*(T2 - T1) = 1040*0.0082*3900*(146 - 6) = 4656288 W = 4656 kW
