Is there something particularly wasteful or needlessly harmful that you would change? Use specific examples.

Finally, comment on whether or not the design, production, and packaging of a particular product do anything to motivate you to purchase (or not purchase) that product, and offer suggestions on how it could be improved

Explanation / Answer

One product that I use every day is toothpaste. A toothpaste is in a paste or gel form filled in a tube that comes in various sizes depending on the weight. It is a plastic tube with is pressed and realises the paste on the brush. It is a common product and is used in every family once or twice a day by every member. Hence the production and supply are in large volumes. It is packaged in a rectangular box which is disposed of once the toothpaste is brought into use.

The exemplary part of the packaging is that it is made of thick plastic which allows it to remain in the same form without damaging until the tube is fully used. The tube form gives it a neat way to be used without wastage of extra paste. It can be stored for a long time without getting spoilt. The wasteful or harmful part is that the plastic is in small designs and the toothpaste leftover after the user makes the recycling of the package impossible. Being used in such a large quantity and as a basic need for every individual, the unrecyclable material that is used is a harm to the environment and unavoidable cost to the manufacturing company.

The design, production and packaging of a particular product play an important role in motivating a customer to purchase a product. These are elements of the product under the marketing mix strategy used for selling. The customer gets attracted with a packaging that is easy to use and durable, a design that is attractive and easy to store and these factors decide the purchasing and re-purchasing of the product. Improving and updating features in the packaging and design of the product is required from time to time to make the product sell at a fast pace. For example, people today are more conscious about not using plastic as it is harmful to the environment and health in long-term. For this reason, they avoid plastic packaging that is not recyclable. This factor has to be considered by manufacturers in designing and packaging their products to increase their sales.
