Question

Can anyone help me answer the questions (b) (c) (d)? Question 6 (1+2+2+3 points) An assembly-line process has five tasks as listed in the table below Task time 10 min 10 min 10 min 25 min Task 1 Task 2 Task 5 Three workers (S1, 52, and 53) are staffed to this assembly line, and the assignment of tasks to each workers is: $1 does Task 1. . S2 does Tasks 2 and 3. .$3 does Tasks 4 and 5. For the following questions, we assume that the flow rote equals the process capacity (a) Which worker is the bottleneck of the process? What is the process capacity in (units/hour)?( i e lnttleneuk point) (b) What is the idle time of each worker in [minutes]? (c) Assume a wage rate of $18 per hour. What is the direct labor cost in [S/unit)? Still assume a wage rate of $18 per hour. if we reassign Activity S from $3 to $1, what will be the new direct labor cost in (S/unit]? Is this reassign an improvement? (d)

Explanation / Answer

(a)

Though the conclusion is alright, the computation for S2 is wrong. It should be 60 / (10+10) = 3 per hour

(b)

The idle time per cycle for,

worker 1 = Bottleneck cycle time - worker 1 cycle time = (25+5) - 10 = 20 minutes
worker 2 = Bottleneck cycle time - worker 1 cycle time = (25+5) - (10+10) = 10 minutes
worker 3 = 0 minutes becasue it is the bottleneck.

(c)

Cost of direct labor = total wages per unit of time divided by the flow rate.

Flow rate (as found in part-a) = 2 units per hour
Wages = $18 x 3 = $54 per hour

So, Cost of direct labor = 54 / 2 = $27 per unit

(d)

S1: 60 / (10+5) = 4 per hour
S2: 60 / (10+10) = 3 per hour
S3: 60 / (25) = 2.4 per hour

The flow rate will now be min(4, 3, 2.4) = 2.4 per hour with S3 still being the bottleneck.

Cost of direct labor = 54 / 2.4 = $22.5 per unit
