Question

Chapter 1 Introduction to Construction Methods, Materials and Techniques 1. Describe in detail the sequence of building and site design in accordance with this chapter; What comes first in building design and then what follows? Remember to provide who provides the design at each sequence. (1 point) 2. What is the purpose served by foundations? (I point) 3. What is a column? To what kinds of forces are columns subjected? (1 point) 4. What is a beam? What building elements typically support beams? (1 point) 5. What is a transverse load? Students will have to find the answer elsewhere (not provided in the reading). Transverse load is the same force being applied to object, causes the member to bend and deflect from its original position 6. What types of materials can the structural elements in question Nos. 3 and 4 be made of? point 7. What is a tension fabric structure? (1 point) 8. What are the various types of enclosing walls in common use? (1 point) 9. Provide a definition for building systems. (1 points) 10. What are the various types of building systems required? (1 point)

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1: The sequence of Building and site design are as below :

Excavating the space for the site construction

Footings

Foundations

Sewer and water taps, plumbing

Basement Slab

Structure walls height and windows, exterior doors etc.

Roofing

Electrical fittings

Finishing and Paintings

What comes first in the building design and then what follows : The first thing is the approved design of the construction site from all the stakeholders, so that construction can follow as per the approved design of the construction site.

The design at each sequence is provided by the civil engineer, hired by the owner of the construction site.

Answer 2: The purpose served by the foundation is to provide the strong base for construction project and bear the load of the construction site such that the foundation bears the weight of the building and does not allow the ground to displace or misplace and collapse of the building. Thus the life of building is based the foundation only.

Answer 3:

Columns are defined as the vertical concrete pole which takes the load of the building on their shoulder and rest on the ground or on the foundation. The columns are subjected to the vertical load force on them due to the weight of the building. The column bears the vertical weight of the building.

Answer 4:

Beam is defined as the horizontal concrete pole which rests on the columns and bears the load of the weight of the building and transfers it to the columns of the building. Thus beams are transferring the loads to columns of the building. The beams are the horizontal spread in the building covering the columns together. Columns are the building elements generally supports the beam.
