Question

Apply what you learned from completing the worksheet by doing the following: Identify 10 rhetorical strategies or rhetorical fallacies that are heard often within the workplace (does not have to be your workplace). Identify the type of rhetorical strategy or rhetorical fallacy that is being used, and then write an example of the stated rhetorical strategy or rhetorical fallacy. For example (not to be included as part of your assignment): Ad hominem: I know that you got that position over John because you were our manager's favorite, even though you are not qualified, and John has the experience and education. Loaded question: Are our hours being reduced to prevent a layoff?

Explanation / Answer

In rhetorical situations, there are two parties involved

Rhetoric uses language to appeal mainly to emotions, but also in some cases to shared values or logic, The ten types of rhetor strategies often heard in the workplace are-

The genetic falacy

This is fallacy hinges on a confusion of casual explanation with rational justification. You may be able to explain how you came to hold a certain idea based on your past experience, suc as upbringing edcations or many of other factors. Thus, the causes of my belief that "2 is the square root of 4" might include that I had to memorize this once. But this is not the justification of the belief; this would require instead that I furnish a mathematical proof to establish it.

The black-or-white fallacy/either-or fallacy/fallacy of thinking in extremes

Some terms are vague in the sense that they may apply to a range of thing that is not sharply defined. An area of parmanent standing water is clearly a wetland; a dry mountain is not. But about a field that is seasonally flodded ? where do you draw the line? No sharp one exists. For practical purposes we have to draw one, but any such line may be arbitrary in the sense that no conclusive reason can be given to drawing it exactly where it did.

But if one argues that since an area is not a lake it is not wetland - since it is not one category, it must be on other extreme- commits the fallacy. Often justifications are offered for this move, such as " it's just a matter of degree" and "any line you draw is arbritary". But differences of degree as well as of kind do exit in the world , and some diffrences are just as important as differences of kind. There are also three kind of rhetoric fallcies are there, i.e. pathetic fallacies, ethical fallcies and logical fallacies.

For example

In 2012 the Presdential election was a fun time for fallacy watchers like me. This Pro-Romney ad uses the ad hominem fallacy to attack President Obama's personal charecter. It claims that Obama has a plan to "kill Romney". This strategy tries to present Obama as a sore loser who will use any means necessary to defeat "Meet Romney", even it means death.

The dramatic commercial personal attack Obama's character, in a strategic and clever way to make it that "Roomney" is the victim here. After all, Roomney needs your help to fight back against this bully.
