Special attention should be given to how the different views of strategy by Porter and Mintzberg would influence your approach.Explanation / Answer
According to Porter, strategies must differentiate a company from the rest. Strategies cannot be imitated by others and sustainable in the future. Many companies project their human resources as a strategic advantage indicating that the knowledge aspect cannot be imitated and are unique to a particular company. Porter argues that strategic decisions depend on the context. According to him, the strategy is both about doing existing things in a better way as well as creating new things.
Mintzberg puts forth the processual or emergent view of the strategy that states that strategy is framed as a result of trial and error. Mintzberg researches on planned strategies and emergent strategies. Planned strategies are those with clear intentions while emergent strategies emerge from positive feedback and chance of trial and error. Between these two strategies, lie the ideological entrepreneurial strategies. According to the research conducted by Mintzberg, a manager can develop any strategy depending on the organization nature.
Considering both the views of Porter and Mintzberg, I would develop a differentiation strategy as suggested by Porter for Delphi Corporation projecting human resources as the strategic advantage for the next decade. I would plan the strategy ahead by developing a clear vision and changes will be made according to the context and the organization nature as pointed out by Mintzberg. The vision for the next decade will be developed involving the employees and clearly projected to the employees through appropriate training methods. The objectives and goals of the organization would be conveyed to the employees through appropriate communication channels.
I would include technology as a part of the differentiation strategy and equip the employees with modern gadgets and technology. Technology training will be provided to all the employees to keep them up breast with the emerging technologies. Technology is constantly changing and accordingly the goals and objectives of the company would change. I would implement the latest technologies in the company and train the employees to be familiar with the new and emerging technologies. In this manner, I would ensure that Delhi Corporation is competing in the external environment with the competitors in a technological and innovative manner. Internally, I would invest heavily in developing the human capital of Delphi Corporation and they serve to be the competitive advantage of the company for the next decade. I would bring this organization change process by involving employees and developing their commitment. I would project human resource as the strategic advantage of the Delphi Corporation for the next decade.
