Explanation / Answer

Ethics in business comprises so many areas. Every business has ethical issues pertain to running a business and dealing with the employees. one such ethical problem i am discussing here is Employees who are deemed to be whistle blower to either regulatory authorities or on social media.

Many employees highlight their company's negative environment or any negative points on social media nowadays. They even go to certain regulatory authority. The aim of these employees is not to create a negative view on the company. But rather creating an awareness among the other employees, the business owner as well as public concerned on the points for their work place to be a better place to work in.

Applying my utilitarianism as the best model for solving ethical dilemmas. I would say an action is right if it tends to promote happiness and wrong if it tends to produce the reverse of happiness. A Business owner must respect and not penalize employees who are deemed whistle blower to either regulatory authorities or on social media. Employees must be encouraged and cannot be penalized for raising work place violation. The action taken by the employees is basically for raising an awareness, if a business owner takes the matter in positive manner and rather than being offended take the matter as a positive feedback for the betterment of the company, can work on those points. This can ultimately lead to the betterment of the company and total employee satisfaction where an employee can feel right to raise the voice against the wrong, the entire purpose of the utilitarianism has the same crux.

De George defines utilitarianism as an act of moral significance, to create most amount of good for the greatest number of people. A whistleblower takes into consideration that there is no way of telling exactly what the costs of his behavior will be, he just does what he thinks is right at that specific time.

An individual must have the freedom to truly act in a moral way. Some employees understand the company is behaving unethically. A HR manager could identify that these people have a choice to voice their concern, leave the company or go along with the crowd; however, self-interest and the ability to be disciplined may pose a threat to take any action. These people have physiological needs to support family and a moral decision to voice their concerns, in this respect, could pose an issue. By being immoral or turning a blind eye, to the situation, could be the easiest option. Employees do have a choice and the freedom to make a moral decision however self-interest can sometimes turn a moral idea into an immoral decision; without the discipline there is no freedom.

Thus, we can say that the companies must adhere to the ethics and for that they must go beyond the notion of simple legal compliance and adopt value based on organization culture. Ethical reasoning is not natural, it’s a skill that must be learned and practiced.
