Question

Please share your candid thoughts. You were just offered a dream job at the premier hospital in your city, and you will earn a fantastic salary. There are a few last-minute items that you must present to the healthcare entity's human resources department before beginning work on Monday morning. There is a release form in which you give each of your social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Linkedln, etc.) passwords to your new employer as well as a notarized document authorizing appointed workplace personnel to access your social media accounts at will.

Explanation / Answer

I like to draw a line between my personal and professional life and certainly the key to my personal life cannot rest in the hands of my Employers. Moreover, even the Federal laws of the Country safeguards every citizen of the nation to enjoy the right to privacy. Therefore, even my dream place employer do not have the right to intrigue into my personal space. I may have a complicated personal relationship with my people, I may not be willing to share all my photographs that I usually share with my friends but with my Boss, I may have some strong status updates that are meant to be read by only some selected friends on my friend list, I may be checking-in at various places, movements of which, I may not be comfortable sharing with my Boss or colleagues at the workplace, etc.

Also, sharing of passwords with the Employer’s appointed personnel are highly unsafe. I could be leaving them with a scope to alter my Social media profile settings, thereby making my profile more exposed to the Public than I would actually intend to. In any of the cases, no employer stand the right to ask for my passwords. It is purely my prerogative as to whether I actually want to share the passwords with them or not. In fact, to ensure the security of our accounts, it is in any case advisable, never to share passwords with anyone. So I can certainly sue the employer on this ground if the employer discriminate my employment potential based on this factor only.
