Explanation / Answer

Bottlenecks and constraints are two different things in business organization. Bottleneck is a part of process which limits the overall capacity of business. Example: If there is a 5 step process in a manufacturing and process time of step 3 is 100 min whereas for other 4 steps is 80 min each, the overall capacity will be constrained because of step 3 and will be termed as bottleneck step. The system capacity will be equal to capacity of bottleneck step

Constraint are something which limits the overall performance of an organization. Example: If the 5 step process is defined and there are 7 resources available who needs to be allocated and distributed to each step. Now, if a particular step can be only performed by a particular resource, then it will be defined as a constraint.

So, in a nutshell, a constraint can be termed as a Bottleneck, but a bottleneck may or may not be a constraint. The reason being, constraint will always act as bottleneck as it will limit the overall capacity.
