A 21st-century healthcare system in the United States will be based. Moreover it will incorporate a computerize component such as physician/provider order entry (CPOE) and e-prescriptions to build a cost-efficient healthcare system. Identification of business problems could prove to be successful IM/IT investments if clearly addressed. Improving care and outcome of patient should be the number one priority for any healthcare IM/IT strategy, although It takes tremendous effort to pinpoint the core problem, recognize the roadblocks standing in the way of making change, and clearly articulate the desired results. Ensuring these are well understood is fundamental to the development of an effective IM/IT strategy (XiaoZeng, Reynolds and Sharp). Any big change requires strong leadership and some sense of accountability. This is especially true in the healthcare industry, where the use of Information Management and technology are not yet fully developed. A good strategy would impact a wide spectrum of stakeholders, business, clinical and consumers throughout healthcare, making accountability and leadership vital. Effective leadership shows a clear and simple vision that articulates why it is so important to focus on implications and benefits to all stakeholders. Good leadership also involves open and regular communication with stakeholders which creates a certain level of transparency ensuring that everyone understands what is going on (Bowander and Miyake). Input of suggestions and ideas of all stakeholders should be solicited in order to build and an efficient and effective information management and technology. The requires that the leader be open to seek and receive advice and still be able to make a firm decision, understand the gravity of such decision, and be open for criticism and feedback. Information management and technology governance may sometimes have a competitive advantage to health sectors.
