each question and come up with an alternative way to find out the same information. (Ch3)

What is your height? What is your weight?
Are you able to work on Christmas Day?

Explanation / Answer

Employer wants to know about your family by asking the number of children. Instead of asking this question directly, he/she can ask "Tell me something about your family?"

Employer wants to know your knowlegde about the languages ( speak, read and write). Instead of asking what is your native languages, he/she can ask "In how many or which languages you have proficiency?"

By asking a question "to what orgaizations do you belong?", he/ she wants to know about your social network/ hobbies. He/she can ask "What are your hobbies and where do you play sports/games?"

By asking question about your height and weight, she/he wants to know about your fitness or personality. If it is a field job, then it is necessary to know how fit you are for the job before appointing you. He/he can ask " Do you exercise daily?"

By asking question about working on Christmas Day, he/she wants to know your capability of working on holidays, if necessary. He/she can ask "Are you flexible to work on holidays whenever required?"

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a federal law that prohibits employers from discriminating against employees on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion. It generally applies to employers with 15 or more employees, including federal, state, and local governments. Title VII also applies to private and public colleges and universities, employment agencies, and labor organizations.

As per this law, UNLAWFUL EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES , SEC. 2000e-2. [Section 703], (a) Employer practices

It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer - (1) to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; or (2) to limit, segregate, or classify his employees or applicants for employment in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual of employment opportunities or otherwise adversely affect his status as an employee, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

(b) Employment agency practices : It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employment agency to fail or refuse to refer for employment, or otherwise to discriminate against, any individual because of his race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, or to classify or refer for employment any individual on the basis of his race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Thus, they are violating this title by asking questions about language, height, weight and Christmas Day.
