Following WWII the U.S. manufacturers were under significant pressure to meet their production schedules. As a result product quality and process optimization took backseats and the entire focus of the industries in U.S. was to meet the demanding and challenging production schedules. Thus the U.S. manufacturers had their focus elsewhere and were more constrained to meet the increasing demands and the challenging schedules that came into play as a result of the rapidly increasing demand. This led to quality and continuous improvement getting ignored during that time by the management of the various manufacturing organizations.

It was only after 1970s that the U.S. manufacturing sector started warming to Dr. Deming’s principles. It was during that period of time that few U.S. executives visited Japan and started learning about and discovering ways to improve product quality and how continuous improvement and quality control can become essential management tools.
