Question
What behavior characteristics are associated with each of the four stages of team development?
The four stages of development:
Forming
This occurs when the team first gets together. During this time, the team is very polite and professional and looks to the leader for guidance. They also focus on the business at hand, which is that of planning the project, organizing the roles and responsibilities of the team members, establishing ground rules, setting goals, determining the meeting schedule, etc. Team members are frequently more nervous, self-conscious, and uncertain during this time.
Storming
As work continues and more important issues are discussed, team relationships will be forged and conflict will occur among team members. During this stage, team members will test their level of authority. It is important that at this stage the project manager appropriately manages the conflict and emphasizes that the goals of the project are more important than personal goals. Tuckman noted that some teams do not go through the storming stage as team members just go along with the stronger personalities on the team. These teams tend to be less creative and more divided, because the conflict is never dealt with.
Norming
Here, project rules and team roles are established and the project work is better understood. Team members have learned to resolve differences and are better able to focus on the work of the project. They share a common vision and cooperate with and support each other.
Performing
In this stage, the team is doing the work and functioning as a cohesive, interdependent whole. They have mutual trust for each other, are self-sufficient, and yet also reliant on other team members. Conflicts are dealt with constructively at this stage.
