Explanation / Answer
School Violence:
The topic we have in hand to discuss is School Violence related not only to Guns, but also the usage of knife or blade and other violence like bullying and harassment.
In the USA, a report shows that the number of school shootings have ranged from 5 to 15 from 2000-2018, wherein in 2018, until mid-march we have had 11 shootings happening. It shows a massive increase in the statiscs compared to the last 18 years and this could bea the record of 15 shootings that occured in 2014. Despite the many shootings that are known to everyone, there are a lot of issues that do not cross the borders of the schools such as bullying, harrassment based on ethnicity, religion, sexual bias, living standards, etc. This research is written based on the news articles, open-source databases, law enforcement reports, from 2000 till 2018.
Cause of violence:
Considering the major issue as shooting where it has a direct impact on large amount of people, the major reasons behind Gun shootings are Revenge, Mental instability due to personal loss or failure, bullying, usage of psychiatric drugs, negative experiences in shcool, abuse from family, sexual harrassment, kind from foster care where they didn't receive proper care and prone to physical/mental abuse, sadistic mental state, no empathy for other people, mental state to prove power over others, etc.
A lot of studies/researches have been presented to identify what could be the reason and how to prevent the shootings at schools. It was notable to say that majority, i.e. more than 60% of these shootings are targeted on specific people or a person, which makes it a planned behaviour. Also, majority of black people were targeted though number of black students in the schools are comparatively lesser.
Most of these shooters have not much of a social group and have lived their lives in isolation most of the times. As many as 285+ kids have been shot dead and 500+ were injured from 2000 till may 2018. The notable ones are Santa Fe, TX on May 18, 2018 where 10 were killed; Parkland, FL on Feb 14, 2018 where 17 were killed; Roseburg, OR on Oct 1, 2015 where 10 were killed; Newtown, CT on Dec 14, 2012 where 28 were killed; Blacksburg, VA on Apr 16, 2007 where 33 were killed; Red Lake, MN on March 21, 2005 where 10 were killed.
The question is, how to we eliminate these shootings from happening? Is strict law sufficient to stop these? The answer is NO. Only imposing the laws will not stop these activities as there are a vast range of reason as to why the shooters turn murderers.
Roadblocks and areas to improve to eliminate violence in schools:
1. Care should start from home - The family members must have a keen observation on the kid's behaviour, understand their mood swings and be friendly enough to speak to them about it. If any kid is able to speak out his/her problems, his mental stress levels will reduce which otherwise causes psychotic behaviours later in their lives.
2. The kids should be treated with love and respect and any family dispute must be avoided in front of the kids.
3. Family must care deeply to notice the friends/social circle of the kids. Majority of these shootings happened because of the easy availability of Guns, either from family members of friends.
4. Kids should be taught to respect other kids and should be taught to accept failure with grace.
5. Kids should be educated on the values of various ethnicity and embrace people from other religion or culture and to form a friendly environment for them to study at school.
6. School and teachers should not just stop at subjects but they should extend the education to personality of kids, to help them grow as a healthy individual. Any troubled child should be noticed and monitored and immediately taken for psychiatric advice or spoken to by the mentor to understand their problems and halp them overcome it before it is too late.
7. Shcools should monitor strictly on the acts of bullying and both the victim and the person doing it should be taken for counselling and if needed, change of premises/classroom schedule must be put in place to avoid such incidents.
8. Guns are noticable by everyone. But petty weapons like knife (smaller one) or blade could cause severe damage as well. So schools and family must watch their kids while they are around such weapons and notice their irrestability to use them and eliminate them from using it in schools and home.
9. It is best to have multiple uniformed people/security guards (preferably in mufty) in school premises who monitor the students for any change of behaviour or to avoid any kind of disputes within the school premises.
10. The best practice is to have a screening technology/scanner to make sure no kid is bringing any weapons to the schools - Most schools might not have this, it is best that the Govt can provide some funds for the same to be arranged.
11. Teachers and school employees should also have a decent background and must undergo continuous mental stability checks to ensure they are not seeding the violence on the kids minds.
12. Counseling must be introduced in schools for all students - The one bullying others could cause the latter to emerge a violent attacker, so it is important that counseling is provided to everyone and their mental health check is reassured frequently. This is not an option in most of the schools now due to funding, but the Govt intervention and major organizations should intervene and ensure this is established in their respective states as 43 out of 50 states have had these school shootings from 2000 till date.
13. Any high or low grades should be noticed and understanding the kids should happen before questrioning. If questioned, the kids will not come out of their nut shell to share their problems, a friendly approach is needed - Both family and school can employ counselors to do this if they are not able to do it on their won.
14. Government must strictly monitor the fire arms sale and put a strict rule on the sale of the gun to school going kids. There must be a Govt approval for the purchase of any Gun and also the records of each seller must be continuously monitored for any mishap from happening.
15. Kids should be taught the importance of education and ability to change the world from very young age, as it is easy to make them believe in something while they are young.
16. Government should also put strict rules and policies for gun shootings outside school violence; as many adult related shootings takes place in the US which acts like a model for the kids to follow. The adult shooter should undergo major punishment which would put fear in the kids mind.
17. The media plays a very important role in these incidents - The media should be able to publish not only the incidents and how the shooter is punished, but they should also show what are the after effects. How the survivors are unable to live a normal life again; how the family of the vistims and the shooter suffers after such incidents; what are the confessions of the shooter once their mental state is normal, how they beg and plead for forgiveness;
Such coverage will implant the adverse effects on shooters as they will realize this instant action will not get them any good and they will end up harming themselves and others.
Conclusion:
There has to be an enhanced network built between students families, schools and mental health agencies with the aid of Government where required to ensure these shootings will be avoided and eliminated in the near future. Especially the schools and the mental health agencies should find best counselors who are trained in this specific area to deal with childern and employed for this purpose.
