Question
You are a project manager for an organisation that delivers workplace technology platform solutions for business clients. It is introducing a private, internal social media platform. This platform will include provisions for staff to share personal information and news, and an area for work related information and news from both individuals and teams. The organisation may then publish this work related news to their external public social media platforms.
• Look through the Explore and Adapt practices. Identify which practices you feel would best suit your team and this project
• Conduct a lightweight planning session for the product. Working on the assumption of 2 week sprints, how would you allocate tasks to each sprint?
• How many sprints would you need? • What will you use for version control of your code (Continuous Integration)? What will you use for your status alert system?
• How will you handle decision making? Work through Highsmith’s first 2 practices.
Explanation / Answer
Being the project manager and having a pipeline project of developing and implementing an internal platform of communication, the first and foremost focus is upon drawing the best of public interest and making use of collective analysis of the types of information to be shared and the need of the same.
There should first be a survey made in order to aware the employees that they are shortly to be entitled to have a communication platform within the organization and thus should be made to understand the usage benefits and also imparted carefulness to prevent misuse.
The whole project should be aimed on the basics of Plan- Do – Act – Check Model and be focusing upon the following stages:
Allocating the specifications to the developing team
Meanwhile embark upon the awareness and survey within the organization
Have a detailed study on the items that the shared medium can cater to
Set a cost effective strategy
On a 2 week working sprint the work allocation should look like :
Week 1 : Layout plan, appoint developers, set specifications for structure and design of the tool
Week 2 : Testing, Promotion and awareness of usage and utility , Implementation. Go-Live.
Observing and considering Highsmith’s vision, the first practice should be less of unilateral and autocratic and more of interactive and participative. Another aim and practice should be to make the decision less ambiguous and more clear to all the stake holders and not end up deriving a quick and foul decision. Devoting all the time that is needed to arrive to an all agreed decision is a key to successful decision making.
