The federal government and all states have a minimum wage. As shown in the documentary "Waging a Living," a job that pays minimum wage does not provide a living wage. Should employers be required to pay a living wage rather than a minimum wage? Why or why not?

Minimum wage sets limits on the lowest remuneration that an employer needs to pay to its employees for their services. Minimum wage is legally binding on the employers. Contrary to this, living wage refers to the minimum earning that an individual needs to cover his/her basic expenditures. Giving living wage is not legally enforceable on the employer.

As per my opinion, employer should be required to pay living wage to the workers as it would help in improving the working conditions for many people and along with this it would also benefit the business and economy. People working on minimum wage are facing serious financial issues as they are unable to fill the basic requirements of the family members. It affects their job satisfaction levels and impact their quality of life. It could also influence them to commit illegal works that would ultimately harm the society. Providing living wage to workers would motivate them to work more productively that would ultimately improve company’s performance and profitability. Therefore, employers should take this initiative and pay living wage to their workers rather than the minimum wage.
