Question
CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE ME SOME KEY TAKE AWAYS FROM THIS ARTICLE?
"The curriculum is never simply a neutral
assemblage of knowledge, somehow appearing in
the texts and classrooms of a nation. It is
always part of a selective tradition, someone's
selection, some group's vision of legitimate
knowledge"
—Michael Apple
The purpose of this quote is to make people think about why certain curriculum are taught to students. The topics included in education make a statement about who is in charge of education. Politics, cultural and economic conflicts, and pressures or settlements that help a group of people come together or fall apart are what makes educational curriculum different. It is interesting to not only look back on the things we learn about from textbooks and other educational resources but also to look back now that we are adults and think about all of the things we learned outside of school that the textbooks completely left out. For example, the history of enslaved people other than just African Americans, the Pilgrims and Native Americans didn’t have this joyous meeting like they teach you in elementary school during the month of November, or that the Dark Ages is a racist term used to describe African and Asian heritage. I always thought it was interesting that the things taught in the United States are completely different from the things taught in other countries. My mind always goes to history topics, but it is more than that. There are such diverse cultures around the world and the things taught in one area would not suffice in another. The quote written by Michael Apple causes reading to think about how certain information is put in to the curriculum and who exactly is in charge of putting it together. It is so important for students to know that there are multiple sides to every story and things they are taught about might not always be taught the same way by someone else in another area of the world or someone with a different ethnicity.
