Explanation / Answer
1. There are several factors affecting the performance an expatriate including his/her job duties and responsibilities, compensation and benefits received, adjustability in the foreign country, environment of host country, and the support of company’s headquarter. While evaluating the performance of an expatriate these factors are very crucial as it helps in understanding the actual performance of the expatriate.
The degree to which the expatriate has successfully fulfilled the duties and responsibilities of his/her job is a crucial factor while analyzing their performance. It enables the company to access whether the expatriate was competent to perform his job. The compensation received by the expatriate also needs to be analyzed for his performance appraisal. An expatriate needs to be compensated as per the current market environment. The ability of the expatriate in adjusting in the new environment and culture with his family also needs to be considered while conducting the evaluation of his performance.
Environment of host country has a significant impact on the job of an individual. The expatriate needs to adjust as per the social, legal, and physical environment of the host country. Hence, this factor also needs to be considered while analyzing his performance. Headquarter of a company is responsible for helping the expatriate with his monetary as well as psychological needs. The degree to which headquarter has supported the individual in coping up with the problems faced by him also decides the success or failure of a project. Therefore, companies should consider this factor for the performance evaluation of an expatriate.

The hard goals of the manager include the targets and objectives which are quantifiable and can be measured directly like the sales targets, revenue, profits, etc. It would help to determine the technical knowledge, skills and competencies. Soft goals of the manager would include his communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills. Evaluation of this goal would help to determine the traits and relationship skills of an individual. Contextual goals would enable the evaluator to access the factors resulting due to a particular situation. All these goals taken together would help determining the actual performance of the manager.
