As you all know, a gunman killed nine community college students and wounded several others in Roseburg, Ore. this week. At a press conference following the murders, the local sheriff said, "Let me be very clear, I will not give (the shooter) the credit he probably sought prior to this horrific and cowardly act." The sheriff then urged journalists not to name the shooter or "glorify" him in any way. Those are the facts. Now, here's the question for you: Should the mass media give publicity to people who commit horrific crimes? Should it name them? Tell their life stories? Air their photos? And, in cases such as the man who killed two TV journalists in Virginia in August, publish videos of the killer committing the crime?
