Discussion: Organizational Behavior Going Forward - reply to two peer

How do you plan to use the OB tools that you learned about this term to assist the transformational process in organizational models?

I really enjoyed learning about Mary Barra. I know a lot of the class has mixed opinions about her but she inspired me through the research I did of her. I was so impressed that she rose up through the company and eventually became the CEO. The first woman CEO to boot! I think she has a lot to teach women in business around the world. Her example of leading through example is something I will not forget from this class. As well as her positivity despite the state her company was in. She knew what changes needed to be made and she is making them.

I also enjoyed doing some research into Millenials and their effect on the current workforce. I have a great fascination with when people are born, their birth order, etc. and how this affects the rest of their lives. It was so interesting to realize that it’s not just that we’re unsatisfied, bored, or have no loyalty that causes our changes in interests. Our parents told us we could be whatever we wanted to be when we grow up. We are all trying to find our right fit. Sometimes we do find it but it is no longer right after a few years. We don’t stay in one job for our entire lives because we don’t mind taking risks for our happiness. I learned that it is important to understand where people come from and how it affects who they are in the work force. You cannot judge a book by its cover.

Explore transformational opportunities in leadership models further as discussed in the article.

I always thought it was interesting how long it took businesses to make the switch to an ‘Informational Age’ as the article puts it (Coiné, T., 2014). Computers and technology has become increasingly a part of our everyday lives for decades. It has, at this point, completely taken over. I think it is important for companies to continue to adapt to their surroundings. You can see the success in these types of businesses, ironically in the tech sector, Google and Apple. These companies deal with employees and everything in a completely different way than many others do. More companies need to be as open to change as these ones are.

This class helped me look at myself as a leader. I have just moved to a new location due to a move and of course gained a new team in the process. Of course anytime coming to a new team you will always have well this is what we have done before with so and so. I had to gain their trust and buy in to being able to change. This all happened in the course of this class so it was helpful to be reading different leadership traits and fundamentals in the class. We also just had a manager meeting and it was insightful and made me think back to the different weeks when I would hear other managers talk about their teams or their leadership style.

Explanation / Answer

I give attention to employee motivation and leadership as a tool to move the organization forward and in the right direction. Employee motivation and leadership style is very important for an organization to achieve its objectives while implementing its mission and vision. Different leadership styles are followed by different leaders according to the needs of the organization and business environment. It can be democratic or situational and transformational or transactional or a combination thereof. Particularly, My work on leadership style in the world’s largest retail chain is found to be a combination of transformational and transactional leadership. Under transformational leadership, top ranked executives visit stores on a regular basis and interact with the employees regarding issues, challenges and resolve the same. It simply motivates employees to perform at their best level. Under transactional leadership style, best performing employees are rewarded and others are also encouraged to perform at a higher level. It is the reason that employees stay motivated for a sustained period of time.

Besides, Maslow’s needs of Hierarchy also demonstrate that fulfillment of needs is must for highly motivated employees. Opportunities need to be offered by the firms to employees so that needs at each level are fulfilled. It is a very interesting aspect of motivation as firms focus a lot on employee motivation.
