Leadership Theories:
Assume you are the manager of the department where you currently work. If you are not currently working, use a past situation or an imaginary situation; be sure to describe it. Select one situational leadership theory and one emerging leadership theory that you believe will be most useful in managing your staff. Respond to the following:
Identify the two theories you selected and explain why you think these theories will be most helpful in the given scenario.
Explain whether you anticipate needing different leadership methods according to the ages, races, national origins, cultures, genders, educational backgrounds, or job types of your subordinates. Evaluate two different situations using examples to illustrate your point and provide appropriate citations.
Subordinates often have a close working relationship with their bosses that gives them insight into the bosses' leadership skills that others may not have. Suggest a theory for a leader you have known in a workplace or in a community group. (Describe the situation, but do not identify the person.) You may even choose a character or a situation from television. How does your suggested theory differ from the manager's current leadership style? What is it about your recommended theory that makes it preferable over the manager's current style?

Explanation / Answer
Identify the two theories you selected and explain why you think these theories will be most helpful in the given scenario.
I joined as a manager in a new company (Automotive industry) recently. The team is a small group of 6 members who are all well experienced in the field of their work. I am also having experience in the field but not in the same industry. Being their manager, it is my responsibility to lead the team in a well-planned and organized manner. However, as the team members are already well aware of their roles and responsibilities, it is relatively easy for me to ensure they are working towards organizational goals. The team members are completely capable of handling each of their activities on their own without any guidance from leaders or colleagues. This mean I can use Delegating style of leadership when managing my team. I can divide various responsibilities among my team members and trust them to finish the job. This is the most effective way as per Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory.
In emerging leadership theories, Transformational leadership can be of much use for this team. Even though the team is highly experienced and confident members, it would be drive team in to looking at existing problem through new perspective. As a manager, I have to consider each and every individual’s own set of capabilities and assign work to him/her. As a group I have to try to inspire the team in to new thinking and try to find out innovative solutions.
Explain whether you anticipate needing different leadership methods according to the ages, races, national origins, cultures, genders, educational backgrounds, or job types of your subordinates. Evaluate two different situations using examples to illustrate your point and provide appropriate citations.
There is no one type of leadership style that could suit every follower. Leadership has to be tailor made for the kind of followers that one have. For example, in the above situation where in the team is having highly experienced members, there is always likely possibility that a new recruit may join freshly out of college. One cannot expect immediate results out of them by delegating work to them immediately. They have to be guided and informed clearly about what is expected out of them. For such members, Telling style of leadership is more convenient and apt.
Even when it comes to dealing with people with different races, communication plays a major role. For example, in case of global team with members in other countries, it is necessary to convince them that certain strategy would work. These members are the ones on the ground working and they have better understanding of things in many of the cases. However, it is up to the leader to Sell his ideas to the team and convince them. Selling style of leadership has to be followed in such situations.

I report to a manager who follows old school management techniques. He is more of a technical person than managerial person. Owing to his vast experience in technical department, he was promoted and worked in various supporting departments as well. He is more in to telling style of leadership. Though he as people under him who have good experience, he still micro manages activities in order to ensure that all the tasks are in order. Right from day to day decisions to presentation to crisis situation management, he takes all the decisions. Having strict control over an experienced and motivated people will only result in restricted usage of their abilities. As the team under him is already having highly experienced people, the manager could use Delegating style of leadership. This would give flexibility to his team members to be more innovative and bring out better solutions for the problems.
