Question

The supervisor at the Precision Machine Shop wants to determine the staffing policy that minimizes total operating costs. The average arrival rate at the tool crib, where tools are dispensed to the workers, is 5 machinists per hour. Each machinist's pay is $15 per hour. The supervisor can staff the crib either with a junior attendant who is paid $11 per hour and can process 12 arrivals per hour or with a senior attendant who is paid $19 per hour and can process 18 arrivals per hour. Which attendant should be selected?

Explanation / Answer

Total Cost = Cost of Waiting + Cost of Service

Cost With Junior Attendant

Lambda(m)=5 machinist per hour

Service rate(s)=12 customers per hour

Number of arrivals in system(L)=m^2/(m(s-m))+m/s=5^2/(5*(12-5))+5/12=1.13

Total Cost /hr=Cw*(L)+Cs*k

Cw=cost of machinist

K=number of attentand

Cs=Costof attendant

Total cost/Hr=15*1.13+11*1=27.95

Cost with Senior Attendant

L=5^2/(5*(18-5))+5/18=0.66

Total Cost/Hr=15*0.66+19*1=28.9

Junior Attendant is cheaper hence he should be selected.
