Chapter 16 Problem 16.4
You are a quality manager. On one of your company’s product lines, a report shows that power consumption has risen from the usual level of 35.5 W to a level of 35.9 W. This difference is, without a doubt, statistically significant. However, the line manager has taken no action to investigate the reason for the change on the grounds that (1) the product still conforms to the specification limit of maximum 36.4 W, and (2) he must give priority to several other products in which there are failures to comply with specification. What action do you take?
Explanation / Answer
On one of the product lines power consumption has risen from usual level of 35.5W to 35.9W. And the difference is without any doubt significant. Line manager has taken no action to investigate.
Line Manager was absolutely justified in his actions. But as a line manager it is his duty, to inform the quality manager of the Power consumpetion, as he was busy in other products where significant care was necessary. Thus, although he is doing a good job, but the responsility of informing to the senior quality manager lies with him. I as a quality manager must tell line manager of his responsibility to report and the advantages of concurrent action. Concurrent actions are necessary as well as preventive actions could be taken, even though not by same line manager but some other person and any unforeseen event could be well cured.
