Question

There is a greater potential for deception with electronically mediated communication (EMC) than with face-to-face communication. What other ethical issues arise with EMC? What are some steps you can take to be sure that you communicate ethically via electronic media? And how do you evaluate the credibility and reliability of the electronically mediated communication you receive? Describe the ways you use electronically mediated communication (EMC) on a daily basis. When is EMC preferred over face-to-face (FtF) communication? When is FtFpreferred?

Explanation / Answer

ELECTRONICALLY MEDIATED COMMUNICATION

It is a Communication sent via a channel such as a cell phone or the Internet (versus face-to-face).

Examples of EMC Cell phones, Computer conferencing, Discussion boards, Electronic mail, Instant messages, Photo-sharing communities, Social networks (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, Twitter), Texting Blogs, Video logs (Vlogs), VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol technology, such as Skyping and YouTube)

Differences between EMC & F2F

Hyper personal Relationships Relationships formed primarily through EMC that become even more personal than the equivalent F2F relationship.

EMC Theories

Technology is changing our understanding of conversations

What are the pro’s and cons you experience with EMC?

1. Don’t assume:

- Identify yourself

- Leave name & contact information (2x on phone)

2. Beware of…

3. Use common sense

Cell Phone Etiquette

Email & Text - Part of your “presenting self” in the same way that your verbal and nonverbal messages are in F2F communication

TXTNG

Beware of problems from TXTNG

EMC is best when distances are vast. Imagine having to collaborate with a team on a project. Now imagine that one person is based in Tokyo, another in Dubai, and a third in London. Do you really want to wait on messengers or mail to make it around? Or better yet, do you really want to have to pay for the plane tickets and hotel rooms necessary for all of you to meet? Probably not. EMC can also works really well when there can't be perfect matchups of schedules.

Whereas Face to Face communication are preferred when there is a matter of serious investigation like over media someone cannot tell truth and it is better to have a FtF communication. When delivering some emotional news it is better to have FtF communication as we can hold him in our arms and consolided him/her.
