Question

We normally think of the arts as very different from technologies in spite of the fact that art (with perhaps a few exceptions) is practiced with the help of technology. This practice creates interdependence between technology and art. To what extent does art respond to, or is shaped by, the technology that enables it? To what extent have advanced and accessible digital technologies, such as websites, digital photography, and YouTube, changed the relationship between art and technology? Are these technologies reshaping our attitudes toward artists? What relationship does the performing arts have with technology? Explain in detail and provide examples to support your position,

Explanation / Answer

People wonder how art and technology will evolve together. Will the current form of technology which includes social media sites like facebook, twitter, Instagram will be able to coexist with the digital form of art today found pretty commonly in websites, youtube etc.

If we go back some deacdes back we will understand this amalgamation of art and technology happened with the advent of something known as the computer. With the rise of personal computers followed by Macintosh and Apple, the relationship between art and technology started on a firm footing. Today we are just seeing an evolution of this relationship where art and technology have become so intertwined together, it is hard to differentiate between the two or even separate one from the other.

Starting from cameras to handheld video games to youtube to online movie streaming, website designing, we can see art and technology have become quite inseparable. In terms of technology, we have reached new heights with the advent of smartphones and the colourful and crisp graphics they come with. Similarly a new technology has recently taken the world by storm known as augmented reality. Even for most of us, we use art and technology at the same time in most cases. The most common example would be a digital camera and editing the pictures with Adobe Photoshop. . Using adobe photoshop, we can not only manipulate images to look like something real, but we can also create a painting in real time without the need to go out and buy more supplies since everything is right on our personal computers. Besides photoshop, the possibilities are endless. From making a video in adobe premiere or windows movie maker, making our own webpage using html, to playing video games on our computers that we can manipulate using third party software, the only thing holding us back is our mind.

Today, almost every person that we know owns their own computer and they use it for different reasons. Even though we are familiar with artists using the traditional pencil to paper or paint to canvas (even I being one of them), a large number of artists today use the computer to produce art for a variety of purposes including movies, website design, video games, or even classical form of art. Though it was developed about 20 years ago, three dimensional art on the computer is used a lot more today than it was when it was developed. We use three dimensional art to display certain elements that two dimensional art cannot give justice to. Using technology to develop art in modern times is more convenient because with new software on computers, there are even more possibilities than there were back when the computer was first being developed. Besides art, we also use modern technology to develop new products in a simpler manner than using a pencil and paper thirty plus years ago.

So a question is bound to arise in our minds: how does this growing technology prowess not only affect the arts but also humanity. What this rapidly growing technology brings, is the growth and expansion of the art forms, making what was once impossible possible. Art and technology are one in the same.

Even newer forms of technology like video streaming with youtube or music being distributed digitally worldwide, or pictures getting shared via wireless technology like NFC or bluetooth and even in learning music or art through online simulations, we can see a close knitting of art and technology. But the question that still remains is: is the new form of technology going to affect the traditional form of art.

Well, what we can say now safely is that as technology evolves and develops through the years, older art forms are slowly fading away. Newer generations are slowly but surely adopting the newer forms of art
