Question

After a pleasant weekend on the shores of Lake Tahoe (elevation: 1900 m), Leroy travels back down the Sierra Nevada to his hometown in Folsom, California (elevation: 70 m). During his trip, Leroy feels his eardrum bulging inward to compensate for pressure Given that the volume of the inner ear is approximately 225.0 mu L in the neutral starting position (i.e. no eardrum bulging), what is the volume of Leroy's inner ear when he arrives in Folsom. Assume constant temperature, and use the data below to guide your calculations.

Explanation / Answer

at 1900m, pressure is P= 80 Kpa and at 90m, pressure = 95 Kpa

at 80 Kpa, V= 225uL

since temperature remains constant

from gas law P1V1=P1V2

80*225 = 95*V2

V2= 189.4uL
