Question
If one carbon micro-particle with a diameter of 60 mu m has a mass of 0.3 mu g How many carbon nanoparticles of a diameter of 60 nm each will be contained in the same mass? Assume constant density of material. List any other assumptions you make. What will be the surface area of the same mass of carbon in nanoparticulate form? Assume spherical particles. What is the ratio of the surface areas for both types of particles? Assume fixed mass of 0.3 mu g. How would the reactivity of the nanoparticle compare to that of the micro-particle?Explanation / Answer
1) Same mass of carbon nano-particles having 60 nm each occupies a surface area of 11.3mm2
11.3 mm2 = n * (4) * ( * (6*10-5)2)
n = 2.4978*108 particles are present
2)Surface area of sphere = 4r2 = 4*(6*10-5)2 = 4.524*10-8 mm2
4) Nanoparticles react better because the surface area to the number of collective atoms increase
when compared to the microparticles which have less number of particles for the same area.
