Question
Hi. Working on trying to answer post lab questions for my Chem lab, and not really sure how to answer these two. Our lab was about separating componets of a Hererogenous mixture: salt, sand, and benzoic acid. A hexane ethenol mixture was used to isolate benzoic acid first. Now the question asks "assume that you want to isolate the sodium chloride first, what solvent would you have to add to the test tube first in this case?" Hi. Benzoic acid is not soluble in water and sand also wont dissolve in water.
Hence we can add water first, then salt will dissolve in it.Then by filtration we can separate the remaining two.
