Question

Glucose is transported into the muscle cell by facilitated diffusion via a glucose specific transporter down a concentration gradient, i.e. no energy expenditure is necessary. Explain the role that the muscle enzyme hexokinase might play to facilitate this process Glucose is transported into the muscle cell by facilitated diffusion via a glucose specific transporter down a concentration gradient, i.e. no energy expenditure is necessary. Explain the role that the muscle enzyme hexokinase might play to facilitate this process

Explanation / Answer

The role of muscle enzyme hexokinase plays to facilitate the process is as follows:

During the transport of glucose in the cell, hexokinase functions in phosphorylating this glucose. Phosphorylation helps in preventing glucose from leaving the cell. Phosphorylated glucose has modified structure which leads to a decrease in the concentration of glucose. This decrease causes a gradient which allows more glucose to be transported inside the cell.
