Question

Water gas, a mixture of H_2 and CO, is an important industrial fuel produced by the reaction of steam with red hot coke, essentially pure carbon. Write the expression for K_C for the reversible reaction. Predict the changes by the lessthanorequalto Chatelier's Principle. The initial pressures are: NH_3 = 2.0 atm. N_2 - 10 atm. and H_2 = 30 atm for the reaction 2NH_3(g) doubleheadarrow N_2(g) + 3H_2(g).The K_c for the reaction is 25 a 400 degree C. Calculate the reaction quotient. Determine .he direction in which each system will proceed to reach equilibrium?

Explanation / Answer

Kc= [CO] [H2] /[H2O]

as per the principle of Lechatlier, whenever a reaction is subjected to constraint, the reaction shifts in a direction so as to nullify the effect of constraints.

C+H2O-------->CO +H2

1. When C is added, since Kc is indepdent of C, the reaction does not shift to right or left. No change in mass of CO or H2

2. when H2O is removed, KC= [CO] [H2]/[H2O], there is an increase in Kc due to removal of H2O. So less CO and H2 will be formed to compensate the effect of H2O. The reaction proceeds to left. less CO and H2O are formed.

more H2O will be formed.

3. Co added, KC will increase. So for keeping KC constant, either H2O will have to increase or H2 will have to decrease.

4. The reaction is endothermic. So increased temperature favors the exothermic direction. So more C and H2O are formed. Less CO and H2 will be there.

5.when ever volume is increased, volume is proportioanl to no of moles, the reactions proceeds in a direction of decrease in moles. Mole C and H2O are forned. less CO and H2 will be there. The reaction shits to right

6. There is no effect of catalyst on equilibrium constant

7. QP= [PH2]3[ PN2]/[PNH3]2 = 30*30*30*10/2 = 13500

QP= QC*(RT)deltan, deltan= change in moles = 1+3-2= 2

13500= QC*(0.0821*673)2, QC= 0.36

QC<KC, the reaction proceeds towards products side more N2 and H2 are formed.
