Question

Complete and balance the reaction. 2H_3 PO_4 (aq) + 3Ba(OH)_2 (aq) rightarrow Ba_3 (PO_4)_2 (s) + 6 H_2 O(l) Name the products. Barium phosphate Water What two products are always produced in a neutralization reaction? What rules can you use to name compounds formed with polyatomic ions? Write the net ionic equation. 6H^+ (aq) + 2PO_4^3- (aq) + 6Ba^+2 (aq) rightarrow Ba_3 (PO_4)_2 (s) + 6H_2 O(l) Include phases. Plus signs (+) can be typed from the keyboard. Reaction arrows can be found in the Tools menu of the answer module. Use the left and rightarrow keys to move the cursor out of a superscript or subscript in the module.

Explanation / Answer

In neutralisation reaction an acid and a base reacts to give product as salt and water always.

When an ion consists of more than one atom then it is called polyatomic ions.Let us take the example of nitrate NO3- containing 1 nitrogen atom and 3 oxygen atoms. In a polyatomic ion, the atoms are usually covalently bonded to one another so they stay together as a single, charged unit.

The different rule for naming polyatomic ions are as follows-

a) Cation is written in the first name and the anion is written second in the name.

2) When the formula unit contains two or more of the same polyatomic ion, that ion is written in parentheses with the subscript written outside the parentheses.for instance ,the formula unit for calcium sulphate is CaSO4 and not as Ca(SO4) .

3) If the cation is a metal ion with a fixed charge, the name of the cation is the same as the (neutral) element from which it is derived (e.g., Na+ = sodium). If the cation is a metal ion with a variable charge, the charge on the cation is indicated using a Roman numeral, in parentheses, immediately following the name of the cation [e.g., Fe2+ = "iron(II) , Fe3+= iron (III) etc]

4)If the anion is a monatomic ion, the anion is named by adding the suffix '-ide' to the root of the element name (e.g., F- = fluoride, Cl-= chloride etc).

The net ionic equation for 2H3PO4 (aq) + 3Ba(OH)2 (aq) -----------> Ba3 (PO4)2 (s)+6H2O(l) is as follows-

Total ionic equation:
6H+ (aq) + 2PO43- (aq) + 3Ba2+ (aq) + 6OH- (aq) ------------> Ba3(PO4)2 (s) + 6 H2O (l)
Since there is no spectator ions so net ionic equation is equal to total ionic equation

i.e. 6H+ (aq) + 2PO43- (aq) + 3Ba2+ (aq) + 6OH- (aq) -----------> Ba3(PO4)2 (s) + 6 H2O (l)
