Question

Complete and balance the reaction, indicate the state of matter of each product and answer the following questions. a. Balance the reaction and write the NIE. 6. AC, (aq) +Ca(OH)2 (aq) b. What is the theoretical yield in grams of the precipitate that will be produced from a solution that contains 45.00 mL of a 3.26 M solution of aluminum chloride and 5.00 g of calcium hydroxide? c. Which reactant is limiting? d. If 8.08 grams of the precipitate are collected, what is the percent yield? e. Which reactant is in excess, how much of the reactant is used and how many grams would be left over? How would you determine experimentally which reactant is in excess after collecting the precipitate? f.

Explanation / Answer

a. 2AlCl3(aq) + 3ca(OH)2(aq) ----> 3CaCl2(aq) + 2Al(OH)3(s)

NIE : Al^3+(aq) + 3OH^-(aq) ----> Al(OH)3(s)

B. NO OF mol of alcl3 = 45*3.26/1000 = 0.1467 mol

     no of mol of ca(oh)2 = 5/74.1 = 0.0675 mol

    theoretical yield of precipitate = 0.0675*2/3 *78 =3.51 g

c. limiting reactant = ca(oh)2

d. percent yield = P.Y/T.Y*100

                  = 8.08/3.51*100

                  = 230%

E. EXCESS reactant = alcl3

   amount of excess alcl3 = (0.1467-(0.0675*2/3))*133.34 = 13.56 g

f. through volumetric analysis(by using back titration)
