Question
In today's workshop we will use calorimetry to calculate the standard malar enthalpy of reaction or the enthalpy change that occurs in a system when 1 mole of matter is transformed by a chemical reaction at 1 atm: AH qrm (in J/mol, at constant pressure and pv.work only), where q omar Let's consider the following chemical experiment: A student wants to measure the heat of neutralization reaction. To do this she mixed in a coffer cup calorimeter 3 mL of0.70M HCl solution and 65.0 mL of solution both at 22.0oC initially. She then continued to measure the temperature of the mixture for 10 minutes.Explanation / Answer
2 a) the reaction occuring in coffee cup calorimeter is
HC l + NaOH -------> NaCl + H2O
the product formed during the reaction are sodium chloride and water
b) the system here is everything inside the coffee cup and and including the cup
upart from coffee cup calorimeter rest is surrounding
c) the system is an isolated system, as no exchange of matter or heat is taking place with surrounding. The walls of coffee cup calorimeter are well insulated using styrofoam (an insulator).
