Question

1.A 20.0 mL of 0.500 M HCl are mixed with 15.0 mL of 0.500 M NaOH. What is true about the resulting solution? a) The solution will be acidic with a pH > 7. b) The solution will be acidic with a pH < 7. c) The solution will be basic with a pH > 7. d) The solution will be basic with a pH < 7.
2. It required 42.35 mL of H2SO4 to neutralize 21.17 mL of 0.5000 M NaOH. Calculate the concentration of H2SO4. (Hint: Write a balanced reaction to help you perform the calculation.)

Explanation / Answer

1) b) The solution will be acidic with a pH<7

Reaction taking place in the solution is-

HCl + NaOH ----------> NaCl + H2O

Initially there were 20×0.500=10 mmol of HCl and 15×0.500=7.5 mmol of NaOH.They react 1:1, so after reaction 10-7.5=2.5 mmol of HCl is left.Final volume of the solution is 20+15=35 mL, thus final concentration of HCl left is 2.5/35=0.0714 M. so pH=14-log(0.0714)=14-0.14 = 13.86

2)  The reaction taking place is -

H2SO4 + 2 NaOH ------> Na2SO4 + 2 H2O

(21.17 mL) x (0.500 M NaOH) x (1 mol H2SO4 / 2 mol NaOH) / (42.35 mL H2SO4) = 0.125 M H2SO4

Required concentration of H2SO4=0.125M
