Question
Dr. Stephanie wants to use one test for a variable number tandemrepeat (VNTR). Describe or diagram a specific test for a VNTR. Be sure todescribe the methods you would use to detect the VNTR....So I was thinking I could use DNA typing and then to detectit I would use a Southern blot or even PCR. Can anyone explain thisis more depth. Thanks! Describe or diagram a specific test for a VNTR. Be sure todescribe the methods you would use to detect the VNTR.

Explanation / Answer
VNTR (Variable Number Tandem Repeat) is atest that is done at the level of the DNA to detect differences incharacteristic tandem repeated DNA sequences that can distinguishdonor and recipient. The VNTR test is based on PCR technology(polymerase chain reaction) to allow amplification of the patient'sDNA. As the amount of DNA that can be obtained from a patient'sblood or bone marrow is too small to detect, it is necessary toamplify or increase the amount by exact DNA copying, in order toget to a level that is detectable. A fluorescent short piece of DNA(primer) that binds specifically to recipient or to donor DNA isused to amplify the patient’s DNA and quantify the % donorand recipient DNA in a sample.
