Question

Which ionization to method is best suited to the determination of tetraethyl-lead additives in gasoline by the GC-MS method and why? Describe how one can quickly identify the tetraethyl-lead GC peak among the numerous peaks of a leaded gasoline sample in the GC-MS chromatogram. The atomic masses of lead, carbon, hydrogen are 207, 12.0 and 1.0 amu. The three lead isotopes have masses and abundances as follows: 206 amu @ 24.1%, 207 amu@22.1%, 208 amu@52.4%. Can the gasoline sample be successfully analyzed by LC-MS with electro spray ionization, a reversed phase LC column and water-ethanol gradient elution?

Explanation / Answer

Electron impact ionisation (EI) is used to determine tetra ethylene lead aditives n gc-ms.Ei is most commenly used for gc-ms for Vlatile samples .The electrons ejects from hot sourse bomrded the gas molicules make radicals and send to the analyzer chaber. we will identify the tetraetylene peak basd on m/z valeues corresponding to 237. Lc-ms was not succesfully seperate the volatile compounds like gasoline it usfull to seperate complex molicules like biological Fluids.
